Frequently Asked Questions
The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is the council for the construction industry in the UK, they work with construction companies and other organisations such as CSCS to promote health and safety in the sector and they oversee the curriculum and assessments required to qualify and work in the construction industry.
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is a company that run the training and qualification verification programmes for the CITB, in other words, CITB are using the help of CSCS to ensure that everyone working in the construction industry has sufficient health and safety knowledge through training courses, as well as, the skillset required to perform their duties in a safely manner on site.
A CSCS card provides evidence that an individual working on a construction sites carries the necessary training and qualifications for the type of work they are carrying out on-site, so although not a legal requirement, it is almost impossible to find work on a construction site in the UK without a CSCS card because without it, constructions sites, contractors and most businesses that operate in this sector will not work with you.

No, CSCS issue all their cards themselves, you can apply for the green card by calling CSCS on 0344 994 4777 as long as you have already passed the 'CITB test for operatives' within the last 2 years and have received your certificate for the CSCS training course from us, you will need to forward the certificate we give you onto them (BEFORE calling in) using the following email address cscs@citb.co.uk. If you have not yet completed the CITB operatives test, then you can go ahead and book it using the following link: CITB test booking The CITB test is £21 if booked directly through CITB using the link above, the fee for the green card is £36.00 and the card is valid for 5 years.
Due to health and safety, no matter the reason for entry, construction sites will deny access to anyone who does not hold a CSCS card. To be eligible for most CSCS cards you must complete an NVQ which can take anywhere between a few months up to a year, whereas, the green CSCS card application is much more straight forward since you just need to complete a 1-day training course and sit the CITB exam to apply. This makes the green CSCS card the go-to CSCS card for people who are visiting the site for none construction-related reasons such as carrying out audits, site visits, cleaning jobs or security work. Whilst the green CSCS card is designed for operatives working in entry-level positions in a construction site, it can also serve as a stepping stone for those who are planning to work in a higher role in the future, for example, the green CSCS card combined with an SMSTS or SSSTS certificate can be used to work as a trainee manager or supervisor while you are completing your NVQ Level 4, 5 or 6.
The CSCS green labourer card allows individuals to work on construction sites in any entry-level positions, these include general labouring, painting and decorating, tiling and traffic management.
You have the option of sitting the standard paper-based exam where results and certificate will be generated within 10-15 working days or you can choose our same-day result service for faster turn-around time, individuals that choose the same-day result service will sit the exam in digital format, hence results will be generated on the same day followed by certificates being ready in just 1-3 working days.
